Which requirements do I have to satisfy to take part in a German course? No previous knowledge is required for our German courses. Everyone is welcome. We offer German courses for every ability group. Your ability will be determined by means of a written and oral assessment test.
Can I take a German course even if I am a total beginner? We recommend our German courses even for total beginners who do not know a word of German! Our tutors are trained to teach beginners and since our colleagues and host families are used to foreign students there are hardly any difficulties outside of lessons. Courses for total beginners start once a month.
How many course levels are there?NIDS offers German courses for eight different course levels all year round: A1, A2.1, A2.2, B1.1, B1.2, B2, C1 and C2. Each course level involves 5-6 lessons of tuition per week and takes Eight to Twelve weeks to complete.
How is my course level determined? The course level is determined according to the results of a written and oral assessment test. The written assessment test takes approximately 60 minutes to complete and covers grammar, reading comprehension and writing skills. It is automatically enclosed with the booking confirmation when a booking is made. Participants also have the possibility to take the assessment test online after registration. The assessment test needs to arrive at our office on Monday prior to course start at the latest. If you take it after arrival it might be possible that you miss class on Monday. An oral assessment takes place usually on Monday and Thursdays.
Can 6 year-olds attend courses at the NIDS?Yes we have batches for children and adults.
If I feel that I have been put in the wrong group, can I change the course level? If you feel that the level is too high or too low, then please discuss the situation with your course coordinator. You will then be moved to the suitable level.
What level of German do I need to begin on a date not for beginners? To start on another date than the dates for beginners, you should have some understanding of basic structures and a limited vocabulary. You should be able to answer very simple questions spoken slowly. If you know the present tense verb forms of ‘gehen’, ‘kommen’, ‘sprechen’, ‘arbeiten’ and ‘schreiben’, are able to introduce yourself in German or ask for the directions of the train stations, you are likely not an absolute beginner. If you are unsure about your German proficiency, we recommend that you book your course for a beginners date or get yourself evaluated from our experts. Then you can be sure to be placed in the appropriate level. If this is not possible, please contact us, so that we can work out an individual solution.
I am a complete beginner. What language is the course taught in?The language of instruction is German. Our tutors use special methods to teach the German language to complete beginners. No other foreign language skills are necessary.
How many students can I expect in my group? Our classes are small, international groups with an average of eight to a maximum of twelve students in Standard Courses, and an average of five to eight in Intensive Courses.
